The second annual Montana Dragon Boat Festival was another huge success this past weekend in Bigfork. Organizers reported a record 91 teams, and over 8,000 total in attendance for the two day event, making it one of the top 10 largest dragon boat events in North America.
The Montana Dragon Boat Festival, sponsored by the Flathead Community Foundation and produced by the Kalispell Convention & Visitors Bureau took place September 7-8, 2013 at Flathead Lake Lodge. Teams from Kalispell, across Montana as well as Alberta and British Columbia Canada, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, and California competed in Recreation, Competitive, Breast Cancer Survivor and Women’s divisions.
The weather on Saturday was picture perfect as all teams were able to complete two heats each for qualifying times. The weather took a turn for the worse midday Sunday, and the championship heats were postponed, and ultimately cancelled. Final standings were calculated using the average times of completed races for each team.
